Rat
Beware of rats!
Walking along the dock past a friends older wooden power boat, I heard what sounded like a small waterfall! He had left it unlocked, so I was able to go inside and start exploring. My first reaction was that a plank had given way and the vessel was sinking. Quickly removing a panel, I saw water gushing from a lightweight PVC hose a few inches below the through hull fitting above the waterline. A rodent had eaten more than half way through the hose, which was the bilge pump output.

I had previously suggested to my friend that he should close the head intake valve, as some marine toilets will leak past the toilet valve system. He had, almost, but the valve was about a quarter turn open, and the toilet was full almost to the brim. Many toilets are installed so that the rim is normally above the waterline, but, as the vessel was taking on water and not able to discharge it, a disaster was in the making.

The rodent had eaten numerous other plastic items, such as bottle tops. It had also eaten about a third of a tube of toothpaste, and a substantial portion of several stryofoam cups. If it is any consolation to my friend, I believe it is poisonous to rodents! The entry point was the engine hull vent, which had been removed for cleaning.
